Year 8 learning how to sword fight

On Tuesday the 21st of March, year 8 students at Meadow Fair were treated to a morning of education targeted at improving their knowledge about life in the middle ages. With the help of historical re-enactors from History up Close students explored daily life, music, weapons, clothing and games commonly found during the medieval period in Europe.

Student were able to dress in period costumes, learn how to fight with swords (rubber) and listen to music and singing from the medieval period. Then under the supervision of their talented instructors the students were able to put their sword fighting skills to the test in quick bouts where the fast and nimble often overcame the big and strong. Other students were excelling at medieval games while learning the skills of situational awareness and axe throwing through these activities.

The students had a great day and many came to the next class with a renewed interest in the period and the request for more activates like this in the future. A very big thanks goes out to the team at History up Close for bringing all their equipment for our students to explore and to all the students who helped out on the day with setting up rooms and tidying. The day was a blast and we all are looking forward to next year’s event.
